The CFO plays a vital role in supporting this mission through sound financial leadership and strategic stewardship.

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the overall financial management of the Diocese, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, investments, risk management, and compliance. The CFO ensures that all financial practices align with canon law, civil law, and the ethical teachings of the Catholic Church. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep commitment to the Church’s mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop and implement long-term financial strategies aligned with the Diocese’s pastoral and operational goals.
  • Advise the Bishop and Diocesan leadership on financial planning, sustainability, and resource allocation.


Financial Operations & Oversight

  • Oversee accounting, budgeting, human resources, payroll, and financial reporting for the Diocese and its affiliated entities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders.


Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Church policies.
  • Manage internal controls, audits, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee insurance programs and legal/contractual obligations.


Investment & Asset Management

  • Manage diocesan investments in accordance with ethical investment guidelines.
  • Oversee real estate, endowments, and other assets to ensure responsible stewardship.


Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as staff liaison to the Diocesan Finance Council and other relevant committees.
  • Provide financial training and support to parishes, schools, and ministries.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and service.


Qualifications

Required

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with a deep understanding of Church teachings and mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s or CPA preferred).
  • Minimum 8 - 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in nonprofit, religious, or educational settings.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and financial regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.


Preferred

  • Experience working with diocesan or parish financial systems.
  • Familiarity with canon law and ecclesiastical structures.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other relevant language) a plus.
