Job Description

We are expanding our surveying team and are seeking a skilled Survey Party Chief to support our growing workload throughout New Jersey, New York, and the broader tri-state region. Our firm provides comprehensive land development and surveying services, and this role is a key part of strengthening our field operations as we continue to scale.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who already knows how to lead a survey crew, enjoys hands-on fieldwork, and wants a long-term home with opportunities for career advancement and licensure.

About the Role

We are currently experiencing an increase in project volume and are building a more regionalized field team to better serve our clients. As a Survey Party Chief, you will independently run survey operations in the field, support a wide range of land development and construction projects, and work with modern Trimble equipment.

This position is primarily field-based and remote, with limited need to report to the office. We provide a company credit card for gas, tolls, lodging, and related expenses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage field survey operations with minimal oversight
  • Perform boundary surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, and construction stakeout
  • Operate Trimble S5 robotic total stations, GPS/RTK systems, and data collectors
  • Interpret plans, perform field calculations, and solve problems on-site
  • Produce accurate field notes, sketches, and digital records
  • Coordinate directly with office staff and Project Managers regarding project requirements
  • Maintain and care for all assigned survey equipment
  • Uphold safety procedures and represent the company professionally on all job sites

Travel & Territory

  • Primary work in New Jersey and New York
  • Occasional travel within the broader tri-state region
  • Rare overnight travel to locations such as Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, or Virginia — scheduled in advance with consideration for personal and family needs
  • Variety of project durations, ranging from half-day visits to multi-day assignments
  • Candidates located in Central NJ (Burlington, Ocean, Monmouth Counties) are especially encouraged, as this helps us better regionalize our field coverage.

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • Prior experience as a Survey Party Chief or Crew Chief
  • Strong capability with construction stakeout, boundary, and topo surveys
  • Experience with GPS/RTK and robotic total station workflows
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and communicate clearly
  • High level of responsibility and professionalism — especially when working remotely
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort with multi-location travel

Preferred

  • Experience with Trimble S5 instruments
  • Familiarity with land development projects
  • Interest in advancing toward professional licensure
  • Ability to mentor and support junior team members

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation
  • Company credit card for field expenses (gas, tolls, lodging, etc.)
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with company contribution
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Modern equipment and efficient workflows
  • Opportunities for long-term growth and advancement
  • A supportive team culture that values initiative, reliability, and continuous improvement
